Briefed vs Gemini: which should you use?
Gemini can help you follow the news on a schedule, but a scheduled chat, a Task and Daily Brief are different workflows. Before asking for a daily briefing by email, decide whether you want public-news research, a summary of your private work, or a newsletter you can read in your inbox.
Briefed covers the last option: describe the public topics you care about and receive a free AI-written newsletter with source links. It does not read your existing email or calendar. Gemini is the broader choice when you want to ask follow-up questions or work with connected apps you authorise.

When to pick which
For a recurring public-news answer, start with Gemini's chat scheduling instructions. Google documents scheduled topic digests and describes results appearing in the chat, with web and mobile notifications. That does not establish that an email contains the complete briefing. Inspect the actual output of one run instead of treating a notification as the newsletter itself.
Try this original starting prompt: Every weekday at 8am in Europe/Vienna, find up to five new developments in practical AI tools for small software teams. Give the publication date, a short explanation and a direct source link for each. Combine duplicate reports of the same announcement. Separate confirmed announcements from speculation. If little relevant news was published, say so. Return the full briefing in this chat. This suggested prompt has not been tested as a delivery guarantee; check its sources and the schedule Gemini creates.
For a more involved workflow, read the separate documentation for scheduled Tasks. It covers time triggers, Gmail monitors and topic monitors, including an example that emails information. At this check, Google lists a personal account, an AI Pro or Ultra plan and Personal Intelligence among the requirements, and excludes the EEA, Switzerland, the UK and Nigeria. Check the current help page and your account rather than assuming access from a tutorial. If you configure email output, verify the recipient, required approvals and a real received message.
Daily Brief is a third option, aimed at planning your day from personal context such as Gmail, Calendar and Gemini chats. It may be useful for a private morning overview. That is a different job from following public AI or startup news, and its own availability and source settings apply. You do not need to connect those personal sources just to use Briefed.
Choose Briefed if the public-news email is the whole task. A useful description is: Practical AI tools for a solo software founder; focus on useful model releases and agent-development updates, and skip general hype. Pick a frequency and confirm your email. There is no general assistant workspace to configure. You can reply to change what future issues cover.
Whichever route you choose, check dates and open original sources before relying on a summary. Neither an assistant nor Briefed guarantees complete coverage or error-free writing. Briefed does not summarise messages already in Gmail, provide instant keyword alerts or distribute a newsletter to your own mailing list. Choose a workflow designed for those jobs if that is what you need.

Questions
Can Gemini make a daily news briefing?
Yes. Google documents scheduled topic digests in Gemini chats and separate scheduled Tasks. Check which workflow your account supports, define a narrow topic and verify a completed result with its source links.
Will Gemini email the full briefing?
Check the workflow. Chat scheduling documentation describes chat results and notifications; Task documentation includes email actions. Neither an instruction nor a completion notice proves your full briefing arrived. Test the actual output and recipient in your account.
Is Gemini Daily Brief the same as a public-news newsletter?
No. Google's Daily Brief page describes a personal overview using sources such as Gmail, Calendar and Gemini chats. Briefed instead writes about public topics you describe and sends the issue to your confirmed email address.
Do I need a Gemini account or Gmail connection for Briefed?
No. Briefed needs an email address you can confirm and your newsletter interests. It does not require a Gemini subscription or access to your existing inbox or calendar. It is free, with no ads or paid tier.
